Penfolds introduced the Cellar Reserve label in 1997 as a limited-release, experimental range under Chief Winemaker Peter Gago. The aim is to push boundaries in viticulture, vinification, and style—trying new vineyard sources, clones, fermentation techniques and maturation regimes. Originally 100% from Adelaide Hills, more recent vintages draw fruit from cool-climate vineyards in Tasmania.

Bright cerise colour. Nose of mulberry and bramble with hints of fig skin, pink peppercorn and fresh bay leaf, underpinned by subtle oak. Palate is succulent and lively: cherry-stone, wild strawberry dust, almond croissant pastry; a savoury herbal thread and gentle bitter-sweet edge give complexity. Tannins are silky; finish is elegant and persistent.
