At just 21, Jean Martell left his native Jersey for Cognac, France, where he founded Maison Martell. Driven by a quest for excellence, he mastered the art of eaux-de-vie, establishing a legacy of savoir-faire that continues to inspire over 310 years later.

In the 18th century, exported eaux-de-vie reflected connoisseurs’ refined tastes and hinted at the rise of a range. As expectations grew, the first blends emerged, and by the early 20th century Martell’s line took shape with VS (“Three Stars”), VSOP, Cordon Bleu, and Extra.

Nurturing terroir

Maison Martell takes a holistic approach to viticulture, from planting cover crops to restore soil health, to using 100% bio-alternative solutions and promoting biodiversity with hedges, nesting boxes, and vitiforestry. Since its founding, Martell has been deeply connected to oak, ageing its eaux-de-vie in fine-grained French barrels. In partnership with the Office National des Forêts since 2014, Martell continues to protect this precious resource, celebrating 10 years of commitment in 2024.

Circular making

Maison Martell, as part of Pernod-Ricard, is committed to a 1.5°C decarbonization pathway with 2030 and 2050 targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. After five years of R&D with the Chalvignac Group, Martell has introduced a low-carbon distillation technology for the entire Cognac AOC sector, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by up to 85% and reducing energy use by more than 50%.
